This volume traces the artist’s development from her early education in Philadelphia, Paris, Italy and Spain to her contributions to the legendary Impressionist movement and her increasing interest in Symbolism. Drawing on recent scholarship and new research, the book’s contributors examine the main sources that inspired her; her efforts to promote her art at home and abroad; and last, but not least, her critical role as an art Advisor to private collectors and nascent public museums in the United States.
